About the Client

The Arc, a seed-funded new-media startup, has its finger on the pulse of India’s high-growth companies. It delivers sharp, objective and research-backed news reports and analysis that resonate with both general readers and corporate executives. We supported the redesign of The Arc’s platform, working closely with its founders and developers. A key area of focus was settling on a common design language, which served as the foundation for collaboration and faster results.

The Brief

We built the MVP for The Arc, but as the product grew, so did the chaos. Features were shipping fast, but not always in sync. Designers, developers, and founders found themselves speaking slightly different design languages—which made decisions slower and development heavier than it needed to be.

There was a clear need for a shared foundation. Something that could bring consistency, reduce back-and-forth, and support the pace of growth.

“Working with How Does It Matter has been a rewarding process for us. The design team understood the challenges of an early-stage company and supported us in ways most traditional agencies don’t.”
Aditi Srivastava, Co-Founder, The Arc

The Process

We started by getting the basics right: a solid grid system, defined spacing rules, a flexible type scale, brand-aligned colours and consistent image ratios.

From there, we did a full sweep of existing UI components — sorting them into a structured hierarchy: Atoms, Molecules and Organisms.

Once the base was in place, we applied these building blocks across the system. Prototypes and A/B testing with developers helped us stress-test components and refine details in context.

The Impact

In under a month, The Arc’s platform had a design system that met its founders’ main requirements. From UI to brand voice, everything now moves with more clarity.

This has helped both The Arc and How Does It Matter meet targets and scale without breaking things.
